คำว่า was, were คือ ช่องที่ 2 ของ verb to be (is, am, are) จะว่าไปแล้วก็คือการแปลงร่างครับ เป็นสิ่งที่สร้างความปวดหัวให้กับนักเรียน

was อ่านว่า เวิส มาจาก is,am

were อ่านว่า เวอ มาจาก are

ทั้งสองคำนี้หนา แปลว่า เป็น อยู่ คือ แต่ เป็นเรื่องราวในอดีต ไม่เกี่ยวกับปัจจุบัน

I,He, She, It, A cat	was	tall.

*** ข้อควรจำ  I ใช้ was ซึ่งเป็น Tense เดียวที่ใช้กริยาร่วมกับประธานเอกพจน์ นอกนั้นใช้กับประธานพหูพจน์ครับ จำไว้ให้ดีเชียว

were not เวอ น็อท >> weren’t  เวินท   แปลว่า ไม่

เนื่องจากว่ามันเป็นช่องที่ 2 ของ is am are ดังนั้นหลักการใช้ก็จะเหมือนกันทุกประการ ต่างกันแค่ใช้เล่าเรื่องราวในอดีต แค่นั้นเอง เช่น

I am a doctor. ผมเป็นหมอ (ไปที่โรงพยาบาลก็เจอผมเลย ผมทำงานที่นั่น)

I was a doctor. ผม (เคย) เป็นหมอ (ตอนนี้ไม่ได้เป็นแล้ว)

The weather is fine today. วันนี้อากาศดี (ท้องฟ้าแจ่มใส น่าออกไปเที่ยว)

The weather was fine yesterday. เมื่อวานอากาศดี (แสดงว่าวันนี้อากาศครึ้มทั้งวัน)

We are at school. เราอยู่ที่โรงเรียน (กำลังเรียนอยู่ โรงเรียนยังไม่เลิก)

We were at school yesterday. เมื่อวานพวกเราอยู่ที่โรงเรียน (เมื่อวานวันศุกร์ไง วันนี้วันเสาร์ไม่ต้องไปเรียน)

Was, Were  ใน Tense ต่างๆ

1. Past Simple Tense   

was, were  แปลว่า เป็น อยู่ คือ  (ประธาน+ was,were + นาม) 

I was a student. ผม (เคย) เป็นนักเรียน (student = นาม)
We were teachers. . พวกเราเคยเป็นครู (teachers = นาม)

แต่บางครั้ง was, were ไม่ต้องแปล  (ประธาน+ was, were, + คุณศัพท์) 

I was fine. ผม(เคย)สบายดี (fine = คุณศัพท์)
She was short. หล่อน (เคย)เตี้ย ( short= คุณศัพท์)
They were smart. พวกเขา(เคย)เทห์ ( smart=คุณศัพท์)

2. Past Continuous Tense (เรียนรู้เต็มๆในเรื่อง Past continuous Tense)

was, were อย่าแยกแปล ให้แปลควบกับคำกริยาที่เติม ing (แปลว่า กำลัง…)

I was eating. ผมกำลังกิน
He was running. เขากำลังวิ่ง
We were  swimming. พวกเรากำลังว่ายน้ำ

เนื่องจากว่ามันเป็นช่องที่ 2 ของ is am are และหลักการใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า คำถาม ปฏิเสธก็เหมือนกันทุกประการ จึงไม่ขออธิบายขยายความมาก ถ้านักเรียนศึกษา is am are เข้าใจดีแล้ว ก็ให้เทียบเคียงกันเอาก็จะเขาใจดีนะครับ ดังนั้นจึงขอยกตัวอย่างสักเล็กน้อยพอเป็นพิธีแล้วกัน

ประโยคบอกเล่า

He was a student last year but he became a teacher last month.
เขา (เคย) เป็นนักเรียนเมื่อปีที่แล้ว แต่เขากลายเป็นครูเมื่อเดือนที่แล้ว

She’s was angry because she didn’t see you at the party.
หล่อนโกรธเพราะหล่อนไม่เห็นคุณที่งานปาร์ตี้

They were at school yesterday. They studied math all day.
พวกเขาอยู่ที่โรงเรียนเมื่อวานนี้ พวกเขาเรียนคณิตทั้งวัน

ประโยคคำถาม

Was he a student last year? ปีก่อนเขาเป็นนักเรียนใช่
Yes, he was. / No, he wasn’t. ใช่ / ไม่ใช่

Wasn’t she angry?  หล่อนไม่โกรธใช่ไหม
Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t. ใช่ / ไม่ใช่

Were they at school yesterday?พวกเขาอยู่ที่โรงเรียนใช่ไหมเมื่อวานนี้
Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t. ใช่ / ไม่ใช่

ประโยคปฏิเสธ

He wasn’t a student last.
เขา ไม่(เคย) เป็นนักเรียนเมื่อปีที่แล้ว

She’s wasn’t angry.
หล่อนไม่โกรธ

They weren’t at school yesterday.
พวกเขาไม่ได้อยู่ที่โรงเรียนเมื่อวานนี้

It was my brother. น้องชายฉันเอง

Where were you last week? สัปดาที่แล้วคุณอยู่ที่ไหน

How was your brother yesterday. พี่ชายคุณเป็นอย่างไรบ้างเมื่อวานนี้
